The faces of four

Kiddo turned four recently (and by recently, I mean over six weeks ago.)  And as the busy weeks flew by at what has felt like time-warp speed, I had given up on the plan to photograph and blog this milestone.  However, thanks to a Photoshop class that I am currently taking, an editing technique in black and white required me to produce a few new shots of my favorite subject.  (Ah yes, I have continuing education to thank for finally capturing these images.)

So, what does four look like?

In our home,

*Four is a sea of questions that never cease to amaze me (“Why is there no gravity in space?” “Do penguins like the cold in Antarctica?” “How are our bones connected?”), and half of which I struggle to answer (“Why don’t the numbers ever end?”  “What makes me dream?” and most recently, the slightly dreaded “How are humans made?”)

*Four is finishing his first year of preschool this week, complete with a new set of friends, and a beautiful confidence in a world that is separate from mom and dad.

*Four has the sweetest little voice and heart-warming giggle, and still loves to hug and cuddle.

*Four is finally (oh thank god, FINALLY) sleeping through the night on a pretty regular basis.  A major victory, especially when taking into account, he gave up naps completely nearly two years ago.  (Did you know, according to his pediatrician, a very small percentage of kids are just not big (good?) sleepers.  They just physiologically don’t need much sleep.  I quite literally cannot figure out how something that has 50% of my DNA can possibly, physiologically, not need much sleep.  We should add that to the list of questions.)

*Four is patient and ridiculously focused when trying to figure something out or working on something he likes.  It is itching to read, seeming so close, sounding out words and trying to write letters to everyone he knows.  It is still organized and tidy, lining up his cars and putting his toys back where they belong at the end of most days (at least we know he got something from me…)

*Four has an vivid imagination (Did you know, we have 100 foxes that live in our cabinets, we have to let them out each Friday so that they can travel down to Florida for the weekend.  They all pack their suitcases with their fox food and fox clothes, but wait… “foxes don’t have hands!  How can foxes pack a suitcase?”  Another question…)

*Four is trying to “do it all by myself” but still comes to mom and dad sometimes for those things that are just out of his reach.

I have said this about every age, but I truly mean it- four is my favorite age so far- amazingly fun (and yes, totally exhausting), never knowing what he will say or do next.  I love it and him in a way I could have never dreamed.  Happy birthday kiddo, I’m so glad we get to be a part of your ride!

Oh! I love him, how is he FOUR already? I still picture him and C, as tiny babies, 6 weeks apart, in their strollers (all strapped in of course!). What you said about your ped saying there are kids who don’t need sleep makes me feel better – since we are in the same boat on that one. Great editing! Love the smile in the last one <3

Beautiful photos and touching words, as always Julia! I have to say, C & I have some pretty amazing conversations/question sessions lately…most of them having to do with atmospheric scenarios (what if the air in space was here and the air here was in space…what would happen then?) we have a lot of fun imagining how Petey and Jezebel would float around the house. Thanks for sharing and reminding me to burn these moments into my brain forever.
xoxo
