butterflies and micro greens… in our backyard

Today I would like to share another installment of the fun my family has in our backyard (and if you are a resident of Chicago- your backyard as well!)  If you have never been, I recommend checking out The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum- it’s a pretty cool place.  They have a variety of interactive science and nature exhibits for kids and adults (all of which appeal to the science geek in me), but my favorite place in this museum is the butterfly haven.  Inside this greenhouse the butterflies roam free, often stopping to land right on your shoulder or head.  They even have mirrors by the exits so that you can look yourself over and ensure that you are not unknowingly carrying any butterflies out with you.  I could spend all morning in this place.

(You can find interesting things on the ground as well.)  C has always been great at reminding me to take a look at things from a different perspective.  So while everyone else was looking up at the butterflies, he was totally fascinated by a trail of tiny ants he found marching to their home:

On Saturday mornings in the winter, the Nature Museum also hosts Green City Market, a year-round farmers market in Lincoln Park (which moves indoors just for the cold months.)  So after spending some time visiting the butterflies, you can stop off and visit your local farmers.  In the past we have bought a variety of items at this market- purple asparagus, winter squash, honey mustard… on this particular Saturday, in addition to a cup of hot apple cider, we walked away with some yummy fresh cut micro greens (broccoli and radish sprouts- SO good for you!) and a bushel of apples… C picked out the apples and promptly inhaled one:

Mmmm, lunch!
